HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY

Mom asked me why the veterans sell Poppies for Memorial day.

I really didn’t have a definite answer for her so I told her I would

look it up and tell her tomorrow.

Here we see a lot of the Orange poppies. The poppies that they

sell are red with a black center.

So here is why they use them… Taken from the link below

In 1915, inspired by the poem “In Flanders Fields,”

Moina Michael replied with her own poem:

 

We cherish too, the Poppy red That grows on fields where valor led, It seems to signal to the skies That blood of heroes never dies.

She then conceived of an idea to wear red poppies on Memorial day in honor of those who died serving the nation during war. She was the first to wear one, and sold poppies to her friends and co-workers with the money going to benefit servicemen in need. Later a Madam Guerin from France was visiting the United States and learned of this new custom started by Ms.Michael and when she returned to France, made artificial red poppies to raise money for war orphaned children and widowed women. This tradition spread to other countries. In 1921, the Franco-American Children’s League sold poppies nationally to benefit war orphans of France and Belgium. The League disbanded a year later and Madam Guerin approached the VFW for help. Shortly before Memorial Day in 1922 the VFW became the first veterans’ organization to nationally sell poppies. Two years later their “Buddy” Poppy program was selling artificial poppies made by disabled veterans. In 1948 the US Post Office honored Ms Michael for her role in founding the National Poppy movement by issuing a red 3 cent postage stamp with her likeness on it.”

 

I sure didn’t know all that, as old as I am , and I should have. I buy the poppies all the time and never thought to ask exactly

why they are the symbol of Memorial day. Now you all know too. Hope your day is a good one!

It was a good Saturday here. The weather was cool in the mornng and warmed up  in the daytime. Just about perfect. Sis and I got

our tomatoes planted yesterday and now we will wait and see

how they do. SIs bought a TOPSY TURVY tomato tree container.

YOU have seen them on TV. Works like a greenhouse in a way.

The only thing is…. it is HEAVY!!  You really have to have someplace

sturdy to hold that thing with all the wet dirt.

 When the tomatoes

come on, it can weigh up to 30 lbs!!   Oh they give you a hook

with it, but you still have to have a real strong place to put the

hook in to hang it.  They say it will grow to at least 6 feet

hanging down so this place is temporary until we can

think of another place to hang it. Oh you can crop it

up if you want but you won’t get many tomatoes that way.

ALL the water you pour into it comes out the

hole in the bottom right onto the ground. ... ME I placed a bucket

on the ground and then watered the other tomato plants with

that.   Talk about recycling!  It needs a whole lot of watering

so why not do both! I am still working on a trough system so

that when it pours out it will go directly to the plants and

not under the fence. I have some more work to do.

I will let you know what happens with the thing and how

we think it works. They say the tomatoes will grown faster

than in th ground. Hmmmm wonder if that is so??

At the link posted above the also have one for strawberries.

I had not seen that one yet. Imagine picking them off

there and not on the ground!! Brilliant

Ran errands and cleaned some today so I wont have that much to

do over the weekend. I received a wonderful phone call surprise from

a dear Spaces Friend and was thrilled to speak to her.

It amazed me that we could talk to each other EXACTLY like

we had known each other for years… even though we have

never met one another! Sometimes we forget that there are

VOICES that go with the friends we make here. You know who

you are and IT MADE MY DAY!!!   Appreciate your

friendship and prayers.
