WAY BACK WHEN

Standard

I clicked on a link at Facebook and boy was I happy to see this site. It takes us all back to the the 60′s when things were so much more simple and relaxed. As I read the content, boy I had to agree with just about everything on it. I remembered my mother using that coke bottle with a stopper on it and sprinkling laundry to iron them.

I used to love the smell of freshly ironed clothes. Mom had the same wooden ironing board until we had to sell the contents of the house and the board never sold. It remained in the house for the next owner. We had a big old wooden radio in the kitchen that sat on the counter for years. It still worked, but was replaced with a microwave oven. Not sure where the radio went, but wish I still had it now..it would be worth more than it was then.

So many new conveniences that make our lives easier, or do they? I can remember it taking all day for mom to make a big pot of soup and her tending to it ..made the house smell so wonderful. Now the crock-pot does that in no time and it tastes similar but not really the same. Did your family ever use Green Stamps? We got them at the local A&P store for groceries we bought. I knew we had to go out of town just to redeem them. Mom bought an iron and many other items we needed at home. I can still taste that nasty glue they had on them. Mom made us kids do the licking of the stamps.

Everything is fast now.. the faster the better, some say. I am one to think that slow is better to enjoy every minute of life. Nice to look back on things that really help us see how far we have come along.

HOPE YOUR WEEKEND IS A GREAT ONE!!

MEMORY LANE

Standard

So many here in spaces are relating stories from their past
and childhood.. so here is one of mine…

Long ago… when I was back in grade school, I used to love
Valentines day and making those little envelopes to keep
the valentines in from all the kids in the class. My 2nd grade teacher
decided that each one of us would pick a name out of a
bowl and we would get that person a special little surprise.
I picked the name of a person I didn’t like that much, but I had
to go along with the class. Some kids were trading names
back and forth so they could get their favorites. I asked to
trade with someone, but no one wanted to.

I remember going to our then 5&10 cent store and looking
for just the right thing for a surprise. it had to be small and inexpensive.
I decided on Silly Putty because the package it came in
was red and it was small. I wrapped it up in some old
tissue paper my mom had and placed it in the envelope when I got
to school. We could not hardly wait to have the party and open those
envelopes up. Some added candy to theirs and some had more
expensive things than others. I thought maybe mine would not
be all that great, but when I opened up my envelope that had
my valentines in it.. LOW AND BEHOLD  someone had bought
ME silly putty too!! I just laughed over that. I watched the kid’s face
when they opened their envelope.. there was a big smile on that
face so I knew it was okay. Smile  Funny how we remember those times
in our lives as the best and they were the most simple ones.

I wish we all could go back to the simple times in life, maybe we would
all be a lot better off.
Supposed to be in the high 40′s here again today and I am sure going
to enjoy every minute of it.

HOPE  YOU ALL HAVE A WONDERFUL DAY TOO!

CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS…

Standard

Do you and your family have a special holiday ritual or tradition?
I try to take my picture with the Christmas tree every year.
Don’t care if the whole tree is in the picture or not. The
background is what is so nice to to look at. I try differnt poses
until I get one I like. Digital cameras make this so much
easier. Instantly seeing what you look like saves you a lot
of guess work too. Mom used to make us sit near the tree
and have our pictures taken so I guess that is where I got
the idea from. Kids in our family always
have that one shot that is special.

Dad got the tree with us kids helping pick it out. He always
set it up, and Mom decorated it
by herself, while dad was at work.I always loved the smell of pine
in the house. Mom always had an
angel on the top and we still have one there.. only this one is
smaller now. Mom hung Christmas cards all over the french doors
that led to our kitchen. Now people seldom send cards anymore..
they call or send an e mail. I think we got less
than 10 last year. Traditions have sure changed over
the years, and I am sure they will keep changing. I hope the
Christmas tree will live on forever in one way or another.
I hope traditions keep getting passed on for a long time too.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOM!!

Standard

mom2     HAPPY BIRTHDAY
                      MOM!!

It finally has come. Mom is 82.. she was born on MAY 8.Party
She never hestitates to tell you that either. She is proud to make
it to 82 and being able to stay home and feel well and lose weight
like she has and stick to her diet. She is strong willed and still
remembers things that some of us forget. {She knows she watched that
show last week and what went on!} She balances her checkbook herself..
with a little tiny bit of help, but can still do the math and keep the
bills going out on TIME!!   These are great achievements for her. She
never handled the money or the bills or the problems of running the household
until my father passed away. It was a whole new world to her and she
handled it fine. Despite her handicap state, being wheelchair restricted,
she still is active in the kitchen can cook some and dry the dishes.
She remembers where the shut off valves are in the house and
can tell you stories of when she and dad first came here to this
house and worked to get it liveable.
cake
I cannot show you a picture of her with her cake sis bought her.
She is terrified of having her picture on the internet. I respect her wishes
with that..at least the recent ones anyway. The picture above, she says
was taken when she was between 18 and 20. She had a few taken when
they arrived from Tennessee in Michigan where dad had found work.
She sent pictures back to Tennessee to the family there. (for my
friends who read this and know her don’t tell her Don't tell anyone I posted it
here..she would kill me… I am sure ) LOL…
Tonight’s dinner will be a “real meal day” complete with
ice cream and cake if she wishes, and I so hope she enjoys
the whole day.

Gas went up 15 cents here yesterday to 3.89.9…Wonder what the
limit will be where people just stop going if they don’t have to
and buying it when they absolutely have to? We have reached it
here and I think others will join in soon too. 4.00 a gallon is
not as bad as it is in other countries, but when you are stuggling to pay
the bills it is too darn high!!! Angry So many in this country are
in a bad way now. I pray for the new president whoever it may be,
they have a hard hard job ahead of them.

WAY BACK WHEN…

We are going back again in the past. Way back to when our
town had a DRIVE IN THEATRE..Ours started in 1950! Remember those???
If you are young, you probably don’t. They are rare to find now
days. Back then you could take a whole car of people to
the drive-in for 5$.They would do a head count so,some of us
(not saying who) would hide
in the trunk and then get out and watch the movie after the car
got inside the parking lot. The picture above depicts the ads that
would run on the screen telling us of the wonderful treats the snack
bar would sell. You could get just about everything in there.
A mini-type restaraunt in it’s day. Kids would take jobs there
to watch the movies and make money at the same time.
In our town there was a swing set and stuff set out for
the young kids to play on right in under that screen so
they would not get in the way.Parents took us kids
along so they could go out and view a movie without
paying a babysitter. Us kids would sometimes
dress in PJ’s and go to sleep in the back seat with
blankets if the adults were watching a double header
movie. Those usually lasted until near 1:00 AM.
Those were the days…Now the only drive in close
to us is miles away in COLDWATER MI. Many people go there
to just experience the whole adventure as it once was.
Now days you can tune your car radio into the station and
the sound for the screen comes into your car.
Back in the old days a speaker was placed onto your
window and you could only hear from one side of your
car. There was a large button you could turn the volume
up with. speaker The speakers were
on posts that divided each parking space.
Teens who drove used the parking lot
for all kinds of things after the movie started,
many a car had steamed up windows!! Wink
Some kids sat on the roofs of the cars
on a hot summer night. When the movie ended
the drivers of the cars would blow their horns
in approval if they liked the films. I remember the
grown ups didn’t care for that as it woke the
kids up who were sleeping. On some weekends,
during the daytime, the large parking lot was
used for swap meets.
I just remember that we loved to go there and
it was always a treat even if us kids did not like the
movie we had lots of fun.
Hope you have fond memories too, if not you missed
out on a wonderful part of U.S. History.

You name it we have it..rain,sleet and now more white stuff is
predicted.. (sigh) poor birdies!! I think March may be going out
like a LION this year here.
HOPE YOU ALL HAVE  A GREAT DAY !!!
