WEIRD SURPRISE

Standard

Imagine my surprise when I cut into two watermelons I purchased and found they looked like this… I got them out-of-town so could not return them to the store. I was curious so I took a bite of one. It tasted like it had some cucumber flavor in it. I guess un-ripe would also describe it. I was sure sad because all the other melons I have gotten are really good this year. Good thing these were on sale and I did not pay 5$ a piece for them like they are in my town here.

Couple of days ago when I was out of town I got out of our HOT HOT car and noticed a DOG, a large golden retriever, with his head on the dashboard of a van. His eyes looked glazed and his tongue was not panting. The windows were only open about 3 inches. I was infuriated beyond words. HOW CAN A PERSON DO THAT? I stormed into the store and the greeter smiled and I asked her to call the manager so someone could call police or do something. She said she would but then just stood there. I asked again and told her this was urgent, did she know how HOT it was for an animal in a car with the windows barely open? She didn’t answer me at all. SO I said I would call the police myself if someone didnt go to that van in the next ten minutes.
LONG story short..she contacted the manager, who made an annoucement. I went back outside to the van. MORE than ONE dog inside and all looked distressed. Someone had already called the police, because one rolled up and looked concerned over the whole thing. We stood there and saw that the smaller dog was still barking but the two larger ones were quiet and looked terrible. Just as the cop was about to break the window of the van..a lady came out of the store in a rush. This van was in the handicap parking place. I went inside because it was so hot, but others stood around to see what would happen. Later in the day I was at another store and the same thing happened. Whatever possesses a person to leave animals in a HOT HOT car like that is beyond my comprehension. They just do not know that the very life of the animal is in jeopardy. A dog’s life can be lost in a matter of minutes. Sis reminded me that if that had been a child, there would have been no waiting at all. WE would have taken action right away, no asking management to help. To some of us, our pets are like family. They mean a lot to us, and we would never put their life in danger like that. It just must be that some people just don’t think about what they might lose, until something happens. I sure hope not to see that again, but know that some people just don’t  think before they make decisions that could cost  them dearly.

HOPE YOU ALL HAVE A WONDERFUL WEDNESDAY!!!

RAINY WEDNESDAY

Standard

YEP I said RAIN!!! COLD rain! The kind that makes your bones ache… well at least you know the weather has changed. Skies all gloomy, but I look to the bright side and say “I don’t have to shovel it!!” Kinda of a slow day here full of chores and watiting. I waited and called the Dr. office again today about mom’s new medication. WHY OH WHY do they make anti-biotics that really make you sick if you take them? After all these years of progress, they still are pretty strong and still upset the balance of your whole body when you take them. Mom got really sick from this last batch and refuses to even take one more tablet. (Can’t blame her) I called the pharmacy.. well she did everything right.. it might just be something in her system or other meds. Well the Dr. office never called me back.. (sound familiar) tomorrow I will have to go in and see someone there to get some action. #####################################################

QUESTION.. If you had the choice which kind of DOG would you get??
Would it be a mutt.. or a pure-bred–?
Would it come from a nice home, shelter, breeder ?
Reason I asked is this question is, it was asked of me.
The first thing I said was.. “no matter the kind really, I would
always go to a HUMANE SOCIETY or the SPCA. I would look
to place that did not uthanize their animals because no one
came for them.  We, as a family, have always had animals
that are not purebreds..just the ordinary dog and mostly
labs, poodles, shepherds, or a terrier. We have gotten them
from friends, relatives and occasionally a shelter. No matter
the breed..they all have our heart the minute they come into our
lives. I do prefer the smaller breeds though. I have been around
labs and shepherds too, but the smaller dog somehow draws me
toward it.

CRICKET

Standard

I just came across the picture of me and my gramma’s dog.
There is nothing like the closeness you have with a pet. The
memories of that dog will follow me always.. Here is the story..

CRICKET
There comes a time when all kids should have a pet..something that
they can care for. We never even had a fish in our house. Dad was
dead set against it. I was allergic to cats and he hated indoor dogs.
Our yard was big enough for a dog..but NO we could not have one.
Funny that all of us kids went on in life to own dogs and cats and
sometimes several of each.

When I moved away from home, I really moved..I went clear across the
country. There all my relatives had animals.I mean ALL.. sometimes
more than one or two  each..so I said what  is wrong with this picture?
Why did my parents..NOT want to have any animals?
I mean my paternal grandpa had chickens, cows, beagle hunting dogs,
a mule..lots of animals. My maternal grandparents had animals too.
Well many years later I learned after my father died that my father did
not like animals in the house at all..never did. He grew up with dogs
but they were all kept in kennels or the barn outside the house.

I grew to really love having a dog around being around one all the time.
I adopted my grandma’s dog Cricket.I called him “babydog”even though
he was fully grown. Cricket was a mut that she got when he was really just a pup.
He was solid black and hopped around all over the place, thus the name.
Later in life he turned gray all over and got really kinda hairy. I remember my aunt
taking the dog outside and clipping him close and making him into a sort of weird
looking character..but in the California heat he just loved it.

Grandma had that dog a long long time, until she moved out in the country to a very busy road.
He liked having the run of the place and chasing whatever he could.
Out there there were stray cats and critters of all kinds. More than once he
got “skunked” and more than once he got mawled by a momma cat looking
after her kittens. We had a fenced in yard so that he could not get into too
much trouble but one side had an open part to it.
He always stayed in the yard after the second skunk incident.Guess he
learned that there was no fun in that sort of thing. When I would go out
there to visit, I would play ball with him and watch him run. Even in his
elder years he could still move pretty fast.
One night my aunt let him out, as she usually did. He would sit on the doorstep
for hours at night in the cool and just watch things I guess. My aunt went to let
him in and he was no where in sight. She called and called him. Searched
the whole yard. She called my other aunt who lived next door to see if he
had wandered over the field to her house. They hadn’t seen him. He would
never go near the road… so something in this world must have made him do it.
Finally she wandered to the road and she found him laying in the road.
His body was cold by then..he was gone.
I never will get over the phone call I got the next day. My grandma had
cried all night long and was beside herself. My aunt was in shock over
the whole thing. I dropped everything that I had scheduled and went right out..crying all the way.
That drive was the hardest I think I ever had in my life, up until then, until my
my aunt’s passing years later.
I close my eyes and I still see my”babydog” running in the wind his ears
flopping all the way. The excited look on his face to see me.
I know there are plans in this world for people and animals..but I am sure glad that
Cricket was part of my life and my growing up. Cricket taught me so many
lessons that I had to learn later in my life about living and loving and losing
something that could never be replaced.

Maybe ..just maybe..my father was trying to keep us kids from the pain and
loss of a beloved animal in our lives, I guess I will never know.
We all have had many pets since and will continue to have them in the future,
but I think for me..I would let the kids have a pet to grow with them and teach
them so many lessons along the way. It is something that
I wish I had had earlier in my life.

HOPE YOU ALL HAVE A GREAT FRIDAY!!

FRIDAY ALREADY???

Standard
This week went fast for me for some reason. Summer seems
to be flying by for us here. My glories are growing like crazy but
are no where near blooming. I probably wont even see a
flower until late Aug this year. Darn that cold ice and snow
in MAY.  Confused

We had everything from cool temps to rain and very hot and humid
here yesterday. Now it is just hot! More storms heading our way.

Got to the store and got the paint on sale for a change.Open-mouthed That
was a huge surprise and with the discount I could buy more
than one gallon. With a 12 foot extension rod.. look out here
I come.. heheWink

Local grocery store had a watermelon for 4.99 one of those
seedless smaller round ones. LORDIE. I almost fainted.. needless
to say THEY WERE NOT SELLING!! Milk was on sale for $2.37 a gallon.
WOW I loved that!
Gas came down here to $ 3.98-3.99. no higher than
$ 4.04 anyplace we went. That is a 10 cent drop in a week. Hope they keep
that up!  We all could use the break here. Smile

Sis’s CAT, she calls Smoky now, young as he is, has gotten into two
fights since arriving at her house. She sometimes lets him stay
inside at night rather than the house that she got for him to bed down in.
She has noticed him climbing trees, way up into the trees and just sitting in
the limbs watching the birds etc. He can get down by himself so far.
He was litterbox trained, she was told.. but he still finds her carpet a
lovely little bathroom area. SadShe is trying to keep him in the laundry room
where the box is so he will know where to go from now on.
IS THAT HOW YOU TRAIN THEM?? hmmm I think she needs lot of help in
that department. My niece did the training before, he doesn’t seem to care
for the litterbox at all. That just will not do!  …  Smile

WELL HOPE YOU ALL HAVE A GREAT DAY AND GREAT WEEKEND too!
