HALLOWEEN FACTS..

Standard
Thought you all might enjoy this site where I found some
great facts about Halloween that I never knew before
like …WHY ORANGE AND BLACK ARE COLORS OF
HALLOWEEN??? or  TOOTSIE ROLLS were the
first wrapped penny candy in AMERICA. or why
Halloween is on October 31st??

Some stores here still let their employees dress up
for Halloween. The banks and the grocery stores.
I love the looks on the kids faces when they see
them doing their normal jobs all made up and
sometimes scary looking. Malls and department stores
also have treats for kids who drop by. Most kids
take advantage of the parties that are especially for
them at schools and churches with games and prizes
and snacks included. This is what is going on in our
town. Some streets there are no lights on for kids
to "trick or treat" ours is one of them. I fondly remember
the days of kids coming up the walk with their
parents and holding out their bags and just wondering
what the heck to do. The art of the holiday is somehow
changed now and the traditions are lost to many.
Whatever your night’s plans I hope you have fun!!

We are off to see a diet counselor today to get a diet for mom’s
kidney problems. I am just hoping it is not too hard to follow. She has
already been on a strict diet so maybe if we are lucky there will be
more things that she is allowed to have.
I DID MOW the yard for one last time today (Cindy) and it sure
did need it. It looks really nice and free of leaves for the time
being. Cleaned up the mower and pulled out the dreaded
snow thrower and will get some fresh cheap gas tomorrow
to get it ready for what is to eventually come.
HOPE YOU ALL HAVE A SAFE AND SCARY
HALLOWEEN!!

HALLOWEEN DECORATIONS

Standard
I know I mentioned that in some parts of this city the kids are
just plain mean and try to mess up your house or your
display anyway they can. It is hardly worth putting
anything up here to look at, especially at Halloween..
They like nothing better than to smash your jack o lanterns
and leave and then you have to clean it all up the next
day. Many times in the past we have had pumpkin guts all
over our porch. The kids run away in the dark after you
hear a big SPLAT and you know your jack o lanterns are
history.
Wednesday I went out looking to see if there were displays in
other parts of the city. YES indeed there were. Some very clever
too.

Some people go all out. You can just tell they love the holiday or they have children
who do.

They obviously are not afraid of someone punching a hole and spoiling someones
fun. I noticed that the haunted house next door still is not finished yet. I was told that
they lost 4 flat hard foam tombstones that disappeared.. either in the wind storm or
stolen. They were pushed into the ground but they could not be certain that
someone took them. A real shame.

WHAT GOES UP MUST COME DOWN SOONER OR LATER…

GAS prices here are anywhere from 2.13 to 2.27  MY GOODNESS I have heard
rumors that in some areas of the country it is LESS than 2.00!!!   Surprised
BELIEVE IT OR NOT!!  Something I never thought I would see again.
I am convinced if I buy any, it will surely drop the next hour, so I am holding out
for a few more days.

POPCORN BALLS!!!

Standard

I know it is crazy to be making those, but it is a tradition I hate to

give up.
popcornball
EVERY halloween the family would gather, at one house or another,
a couple of days before the holiday arrived.
They would have a light supper and then make popcorn balls
for the trick or treaters. This was way back in the day.. when you could
give those out. We loved sitting around the table smelling the popcorn,
watching my aunt boil the mixture to put on the balls.
This was BEFORE microwaves, so large kettles were
used to pop a whole bag of popcorn up. If you messed up a batch
and scorched it..(yes it happened) you would have to start all over
again. One person would cut up squares of wax paper to cover the
balls. We always used wax paper.

The boiling liquid was MOLASSES based. YEP.. molasses!
Our family was from Tennessee, and moved to Ca. They brought
the tradition with them.
Kids would get a real shock when they got home and ate those
popcorn balls. Seems they wouldn’t dry out and leave the ball hard,
just nice and chewy, depending on who cooked the recipe.
If my grandma made them she would use a LOT of molasses.
The balls would be really dark. We knew some of those would be
either  chewy or kinda of bitter tasting. She used the really dark
Brer Rabbit molasses because that was as close to black strap
as she could get. ICK!! I never liked the flavor of that.  Confused
When my aunt made them she made them with sugar and
not as strong. I liked those best of all.

Funny on some holidays that you get a taste for the old time
things you had when you were a child. I never lived close to
any of my grandparents until I was well into my 20’s. I moved
to Ca. and got accustomed to their tradition at Halloween.

My folks in Michigan never had the popcorn tradition, even though
they both were from Tennessee. My mother made molasses cookies,
the rolled out and cut kind, only once a year and that was at
Christmas. She doesn’t make them anymore.
cookie
I started my own tradition for myself. I made sugar cookies
and decorated them for all the holidays. At halloween they are
pumpkins with faces. This year I will be trying the popcorn
balls because Mom won’t eat them and she is on a strict diet.
Sis might take some to work with her just to make sure they
all get out of sight quick. I hope I don’t boil the mixture too
long.. it would be a shame to waste all that good popcorn! LOL

DO YOU HAVE A HALLOWEEN TRADITION THAT YOU STILL FOLLOW???

CHORE DAY

Standard
Monday was chore day.. don’t ya just love those??
I cleaned up some of the garage and put some things away
that I surely won’t be using again. I wondered if I should run
the gas out of my lawn mower, but decided maybe to wait on that.
My side yard is still pretty green and could use one more cutting before
the snow falls on it permanently. The tomato vine, I had in a large
planter inside my garage now, still has some tomatoes on it.Surprised
They are the grape variety and are beginning to get ripe,
believe it or not. I was so surprised. I will keep watering it
and see what happens. Smile
###############################################################
The high winds we had blew most all the
leaves off our backyard tree so now there is some raking to do to finish
the yard up if it gets warm enough. I hate raking in the cold..Sad
NOT happy about that at all. Looks like Halloween trick or treaters
will have a nice day in the 50’s. Too bad they have to wait until
dark and it gets cold to go out in it. We turn the clocks back this coming
SUNDAY. Boy will it be dark out by 5 PM! That means some people
will be standing in line to vote in the DARK!!   Confused

I had to deal with very lazy people yesterday. I hate that!!
I went and took the orders
for a special diet counselor to mom’s dr. office. ALL the people working in
that place could not and would not do anything for me. She told me
I would have to call the place myself and make the appt. HUH??The
specialist told me to have the dr. do it. So I spent almost an hour
trying to find out just WHO to contact. I am sure that office would
have know this information at least. Baring teeth So I made the appt. myself
and it wasnt hard after the many twists and turns it took to find out
where to call.  They could have told me that easy.. Sad

Word is… thru the grapevine… that a gal was almost robbed Sunday
morning taking a bank bag to the bank here. It was pretty dark
Sunday morning with rain and wind etc. She pulls up to the drop
box and sees a guy standing behind a tree with a hood, mask and
GUN!  Boy did she hit the gas and got out of there on two wheels
practically. The bank says it is in the process of putting up better
security lights and survelliance video. Boy, the way things are now days
they better hurry. It just isnt safe anyplace anymore. ( Even in a small
town.) A girl was attacked not two blocks from my house about a
month ago. They are still looking for the man who did it. Warnings
went out all over town for everyone to be on the look out and travel in
pairs after dark. Pays to be safe and not sorry.

HOPE YOU ALL HAVE A GREAT TUESDAY!!
